Removal of Breast Lump

Removal of a lump in the breast, also known as lumpectomy or breast mass excision, is a surgical procedure aimed at removing abnormal growths or lumps in the breast tissue. While many breast lumps are benign, some may be cancerous or have the potential to become cancerous, necessitating their removal. Breast lump removal is performed to diagnose and treat breast conditions, alleviate symptoms, and ensure optimal breast health.

About This Treatment

Breast lump removal involves the surgical excision of abnormal tissue growths or masses detected in the breast.

Lumps may be discovered during routine breast exams, mammograms, or ultrasound scans, or may present as palpable masses felt by the patient. While not all breast lumps are cancerous, their removal is often recommended to obtain a definitive diagnosis, rule out malignancy, or alleviate symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or changes in breast appearance.

Before surgery, you will undergo a comprehensive evaluation, including a physical examination, imaging studies (such as mammograms or ultrasound), and biopsy to determine the nature of the breast lump and plan the surgical approach.

The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia to ensure your comfort. The surgeon makes an incision over the affected area of the breast and carefully excises the abnormal tissue along with a margin of surrounding healthy tissue to ensure complete removal.

The excised breast tissue will be sent to a laboratory for microscopic examination (biopsy) to determine whether the lump is benign or malignant. The results of the biopsy guide further treatment decisions, such as additional surgery, radiation therapy, or systemic treatment.

Once the abnormal tissue is removed, the incision is meticulously closed with sutures, and dressings or surgical tape are applied to facilitate healing. You may experience some swelling, bruising, and discomfort following surgery, which can be managed with pain medication and proper post-operative care.

Removing the breast lump allows for a definitive diagnosis, distinguishing between benign and malignant growths and guiding further treatment decisions. Undergoing surgery can alleviate symptoms associated with breast lumps, such as pain, discomfort, or changes in breast appearance, improving quality of life. Early detection and removal of abnormal breast tissue contribute to optimal breast health and reduce the risk of future complications or progression to breast cancer.

Candidates for breast lump removal surgery are individuals with palpable or detected breast lumps, whether discovered during self-exams, imaging studies, or clinical examinations. Candidates may experience symptoms such as pain, discomfort, or changes in breast appearance. While not all lumps are cancerous, those seeking definitive diagnosis, alleviation of symptoms, or prevention of potential malignancy are suitable candidates. Candidates should be in good overall health, with realistic expectations about the outcomes of surgery. It’s essential for individuals to undergo a thorough evaluation by a board-certified oncoplastic breast surgeon to determine candidacy and discuss personalised treatment options tailored to their needs and goals.

Following the removal of a breast lump, common side effects may include temporary discomfort, swelling, bruising, and changes in sensation around the surgical site. Patients may also experience scarring, which typically fades over time. Infrequent complications may include infection, bleeding, seroma (fluid) formation, or changes in breast shape or contour. It’s crucial for patients to follow post-operative care instructions provided by their surgeon to minimise risks and ensure a smooth recovery. Regular follow-up appointments allow the surgeon to monitor progress and address any concerns promptly, ensuring optimal healing and long-term outcomes.

Following the removal of a breast lump, downtime typically ranges from 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients can return to non-strenuous work within a few days, depending on individual healing. Driving may be resumed once off prescription pain medication and when mobility and comfort allow, usually within 1 to 2 weeks. Engaging in strenuous activities, including gym workouts, should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks to allow proper healing and minimise complications. Patients are advised to follow post-operative guidelines provided by their surgeon and gradually reintroduce physical activities as tolerated during the recovery period.

Mr Henderson was kind and understanding and I felt completely at ease with him. He was well informed of my condition and explained his treatment plan to me fully. I have been a patient of Dr Basu since being diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few months ago. Despite the curse of my diagnosis I couldn’t have asked for a better Dr and standard of care. He and his team are super-efficient, have gone out of their way to get fast effective treatment for me and he has super-human levels of patience. During every consultation he has been ever patient, carefully listened to all my questions and concerns then taken the time to explain everything to me and provided constant reassurance. He has been accessible at all times even over weekends and the support has been broad. He looks after you as if you are family and despite having a 90 minute journey to see him at times as we wanted the fastest appointment we couldn’t ask for anything more. Our family see him as an angel not just a doctor for what he has done for us and would recommend him in less than a blink of a eye.

I first met Naren Basu in 2016 at the Queen Elizabeth Women’s Hospital. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. He is an exceptionally skilled man at putting people at their ease and explaining everything with great patience and candour. He is a consummate professional and really knows his stuff, especially relating to breast cancer. He is very clever, witty, and a super surgeon. He carried out a reduction to both my breasts, removing the tumours at the same time. I was fortunate indeed to have my surgery via the NHS, it would have been very expensive as a private patient but worth every penny. I felt like a million dollars after my operation. I think he is a fabulous man and so skilled on so many levels and outstanding in human kindness.

Nine days before I was due to go on an extended holiday I discovered problems in both breasts. I was lucky enough to get an appointment 3 days before travel. Mr Basu even called me on the day of the appointment to ask me to come in earlier to ensure they had time to undergo all of the tests that evening. Anyone who has had these problems will know how overwhelming it is but Mr Basu took his time to speak to me and explained all of the procedures/tests that would be carried out that evening and possible outcomes. I did have a small procedure and again everything was explained fully and felt quite safe in his hands. The follow up appointments were just as thorough and Mr Basu made sure I understood all that we discussed. If I ever found myself in this position again Mr Basu would be my first port of call.
