About This Treatment

Nipple sparing mastectomy is a surgical procedure aimed at removing breast tissue while preserving the nipple-areola complex (NAC).

Unlike traditional mastectomies, which involve the complete removal of the breast tissue, including the nipple, NSM allows for the conservation of the natural nipple structure. This technique is particularly relevant for patients with early-stage breast cancer, disease away from the nipple or those at high risk of developing breast cancer due to genetic factors.

Before undergoing a nipple sparing mastectomy, patients typically undergo thorough preoperative evaluations, including imaging studies and biopsy, to assess the extent of the disease and determine the suitability for the procedure. During the surgery, the breast tissue is removed through carefully planned incisions, while preserving the nipple and areola (area of darkened skin that surrounds the nipple). The procedure is often performed in conjunction with breast reconstruction to restore the breast’s shape and symmetry.

The primary goal of nipple sparing mastectomy is to effectively treat breast cancer while preserving the natural appearance of the breast. Studies have shown favourable cosmetic outcomes and high patient satisfaction rates following NSM, with minimal impact on nipple sensation and function. Additionally, preserving the nipple-areola complex can contribute to improved body image and quality of life for breast cancer survivors.

Birmingham Breast Group’s cancer care service is dedicated to providing comprehensive and personalised care to patients with breast cancer. The integration of nipple sparing mastectomy into our treatment approach underscores our commitment to offering innovative and patient-centred care. By preserving the nipple and areola, you can maintain a sense of normalcy and femininity post-surgery, which can have significant psychological benefits.

Moreover, Birmingham Breast Group’s emphasis on patient-centred care ensures that you are actively involved in the decision-making process regarding your treatment. In summary, nipple sparing mastectomy represents a significant advancement in breast cancer treatment, offering breast cancer patients like you, a more tailored and aesthetically pleasing surgical option. Through its integration with Birmingham Breast Group’s cancer care service, this innovative technique exemplifies the commitment to excellence and patient-centred care. By prioritising both oncologic efficacy and patient satisfaction, Birmingham Breast Group continues to set the standard for comprehensive breast cancer care.

Frequently Asked Questions

The team at Birmingham Breast Group comprises highly skilled surgeons specialising in breast oncology and reconstruction, backed by extensive experience and training in nipple sparing mastectomy. Our expertise ensures precise surgical execution and optimal outcomes for patients undergoing this procedure.

Nipple sparing mastectomy may be recommended for select patients with early-stage breast cancer, disease distant to the nipple areola complex or those at high risk of developing the condition. Candidates typically have small tumours located away from the nipple-areola complex, with no evidence of nipple involvement or extensive ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Additionally, individuals undergoing risk-reducing mastectomy due to genetic predisposition, such as BRCA mutation carriers, may benefit from this procedure. Careful evaluation by our multidisciplinary team determines eligibility, ensuring that patients receive personalised recommendations tailored to their specific cancer profile and cosmetic goals.

Following nipple sparing mastectomy, patients may experience temporary side effects such as bruising, swelling, and discomfort around the surgical site. Nipple sensation may be diminished initially but often improves over time. If complications develop, such as infection, nipple necrosis, or changes in nipple appearance may occur, further medical attention will be required – although complications are uncommon. Additionally, there’s a risk of cancer recurrence, although it’s generally low, especially with careful patient selection and adjuvant therapies. Close monitoring and adherence to postoperative care instructions help mitigate risks, ensuring optimal recovery and long-term outcomes for patients undergoing this procedure.

The expected downtime following nipple sparing mastectomy varies among individuals but typically ranges from two to six weeks. Patients can often return to sedentary work within two weeks, while more physically demanding occupations may require additional recovery time. Moderate exercise, such as walking, can usually be resumed after two to four weeks, with gradually increasing intensity over time. Driving is generally permitted once patients are off pain medications and feel comfortable behind the wheel, typically within one to two weeks. However, it’s essential to consult with our team for personalised guidance based on individual recovery progress and any specific restrictions.

Mr Henderson was kind and understanding and I felt completely at ease with him. He was well informed of my condition and explained his treatment plan to me fully. He has been very attentive in answering emails from me and I really cannot recommend him highly enough. I feel very fortunate to have been in his care.

I have been a patient of Dr Basu since being diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few months ago. Despite the curse of my diagnosis I couldn’t have asked for a better Dr and standard of care. He and his team are super-efficient, have gone out of their way to get fast effective treatment for me and he has super-human levels of patience. During every consultation he has been ever patient, carefully listened to all my questions and concerns then taken the time to explain everything to me and provided constant reassurance. He has been accessible at all times even over weekends and the support has been broad. He looks after you as if you are family and despite having a 90 minute journey to see him at times as we wanted the fastest appointment we couldn’t ask for anything more. Our family see him as an angel not just a doctor for what he has done for us and would recommend him in less than a blink of a eye.

I first met Naren Basu in 2016 at the Queen Elizabeth Women’s Hospital. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. He is an exceptionally skilled man at putting people at their ease and explaining everything with great patience and candour. He is a consummate professional and really knows his stuff, especially relating to breast cancer. He is very clever, witty, and a super surgeon. He carried out a reduction to both my breasts, removing the tumours at the same time. I was fortunate indeed to have my surgery via the NHS, it would have been very expensive as a private patient but worth every penny. I felt like a million dollars after my operation. I think he is a fabulous man and so skilled on so many levels and outstanding in human kindness.

Nine days before I was due to go on an extended holiday I discovered problems in both breasts. I was lucky enough to get an appointment 3 days before travel. Mr Basu even called me on the day of the appointment to ask me to come in earlier to ensure they had time to undergo all of the tests that evening. Anyone who has had these problems will know how overwhelming it is but Mr Basu took his time to speak to me and explained all of the procedures/tests that would be carried out that evening and possible outcomes. I did have a small procedure and again everything was explained fully and felt quite safe in his hands. The follow up appointments were just as thorough and Mr Basu made sure I understood all that we discussed. If I ever found myself in this position again Mr Basu would be my first port of call.

I am currently under the care of Dr Daniel Henderson at Good Hope Hospital, and I couldn’t ask for better. He listens, and speaks to you in laymans terms so you understand what is going on now and in the future. He talks to you and not at you, and has a very calm and soothing manner. If you are lucky enough to be referred to him, rest assured that you are in good hands, as he gets things actioned quickly.
