About This Treatment
Breast reconstruction using implants involves the surgical insertion of silicone or saline implants to recreate the shape and volume of the breast following mastectomy.
This procedure can be performed immediately after mastectomy or delayed, allowing you time to consider your options and focus on cancer treatment first. The decision of when to undergo reconstruction depends on various factors, including individual preferences, cancer treatment plan, and overall health status.
The process of breast reconstruction with implants typically begins with consultations, where your surgeon evaluates your medical history, assesses the breast tissue, and discusses the desired outcome. You are encouraged to express your expectations and concerns to ensure a personalised treatment plan.
The surgical procedure involves several steps. First, tissue expanders may be placed beneath the chest muscle to gradually stretch the skin and muscle over a period of weeks or months. This preparatory phase allows for optimal implant placement and natural-looking results. Once the desired expansion is achieved, the tissue expanders are replaced with permanent implants through a subsequent surgery. The size, shape, and placement of implants are carefully chosen to achieve symmetry and proportionality with your body.
Post-operative care involves close monitoring and support to ensure optimal healing and recovery. BBG’s multidisciplinary team coordinates follow-up appointments, including regular check-ups and consultations with oncologists, oncoplastic surgeons, breast care nurses and other specialists as needed.
Breast reconstruction with implants is seamlessly integrated into Birmingham Breast Group’s comprehensive breast cancer management services, offering a holistic approach to treatment and recovery. BBG prioritises patient-centred care, providing support and guidance at every stage of the journey. From diagnosis and treatment to post-operative care and survivorship, BBG’s multidisciplinary team collaborates to address your physical, emotional, and psychological needs. During surgery, you receive individualised care from skilled medical professionals who prioritise safety, comfort, and aesthetic outcomes.
Breast reconstruction with implants offers numerous benefits beyond physical restoration. The procedure can enhance self-confidence, improve body image, and promote emotional well-being. Many patients report feeling more comfortable and empowered in their own skin following reconstruction, allowing them to focus on life beyond cancer treatment.
Additionally, breast reconstruction with implants can help mitigate the psychological impact of mastectomy, reducing feelings of loss and insecurity associated with changes in body appearance. By restoring a sense of wholeness and femininity, this procedure enables patients like you to reclaim control over your bodies and identity.
In conclusion, breast reconstruction with implants is a transformative procedure that plays a vital role in the comprehensive breast cancer management services offered by Birmingham Breast Group. Through personalised care, skilled surgical techniques, and ongoing support, you can achieve physical, emotional, and psychological healing and restoration. By embracing innovation and compassion, BBG empowers you to navigate your cancer journey with confidence and resilience.
Frequently Asked Questions
Candidates for breast reconstruction with implants typically include individuals who have undergone mastectomy due to breast cancer or other medical conditions. They may desire to restore the shape, volume, and symmetry of their breasts, enhancing their physical appearance and emotional well-being. Candidates should be in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure. Consultation with an oncoplastic surgeon is essential to assess candidacy, considering factors such as the individual’s medical history, cancer treatment plan, and personal preferences. Ultimately, candidates for breast reconstruction with implants seek to regain a sense of wholeness and confidence following single or double mastectomy.
Following breast reconstruction with implants, patients may experience temporary side effects such as swelling, bruising, and discomfort at the surgical site. In some cases, there may be changes in sensation, including numbness or hypersensitivity in the breasts or surrounding areas. Additionally, patients should be aware of the risk of complications such as infection, implant rupture, or capsular contracture, where scar tissue tightens around the implant. Regular follow-up appointments with our surgical team are essential to monitor for any signs of complications and ensure optimal healing and outcomes.
There is some associated risk between breast implants and a rare type of immune system cell cancer called Breast Implant Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma (BAI-ALCL). Further information can be obtained from https://www.bapras.org.uk/. Your oncoplastic surgeon will discuss this in more detail with you.
Following breast reconstruction with implants, downtime varies depending on individual healing and the specific surgical approach. Generally, patients may expect to take one to two weeks off work, allowing time for initial recovery and managing any discomfort. Return to the gym and strenuous activities typically occurs after four to six weeks, following clearance from the surgical team. Driving may be resumed once patients feel comfortable, usually within one to two weeks post-surgery, provided they can perform emergency manoeuvres safely. However, it’s crucial to follow the recommendations of our surgical team and gradually resume activities to ensure optimal healing and minimise the risk of complications.

I have been a patient of Dr Basu since being diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few months ago. Despite the curse of my diagnosis I couldn’t have asked for a better Dr and standard of care. He and his team are super-efficient, have gone out of their way to get fast effective treatment for me and he has super-human levels of patience. During every consultation he has been ever patient, carefully listened to all my questions and concerns then taken the time to explain everything to me and provided constant reassurance. He has been accessible at all times even over weekends and the support has been broad. He looks after you as if you are family and despite having a 90 minute journey to see him at times as we wanted the fastest appointment we couldn’t ask for anything more. Our family see him as an angel not just a doctor for what he has done for us and would recommend him in less than a blink of a eye.

I first met Naren Basu in 2016 at the Queen Elizabeth Women’s Hospital. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. He is an exceptionally skilled man at putting people at their ease and explaining everything with great patience and candour. He is a consummate professional and really knows his stuff, especially relating to breast cancer. He is very clever, witty, and a super surgeon. He carried out a reduction to both my breasts, removing the tumours at the same time. I was fortunate indeed to have my surgery via the NHS, it would have been very expensive as a private patient but worth every penny. I felt like a million dollars after my operation. I think he is a fabulous man and so skilled on so many levels and outstanding in human kindness.

Nine days before I was due to go on an extended holiday I discovered problems in both breasts. I was lucky enough to get an appointment 3 days before travel. Mr Basu even called me on the day of the appointment to ask me to come in earlier to ensure they had time to undergo all of the tests that evening. Anyone who has had these problems will know how overwhelming it is but Mr Basu took his time to speak to me and explained all of the procedures/tests that would be carried out that evening and possible outcomes. I did have a small procedure and again everything was explained fully and felt quite safe in his hands. The follow up appointments were just as thorough and Mr Basu made sure I understood all that we discussed. If I ever found myself in this position again Mr Basu would be my first port of call.

I am currently under the care of Dr Daniel Henderson at Good Hope Hospital, and I couldn’t ask for better. He listens, and speaks to you in laymans terms so you understand what is going on now and in the future. He talks to you and not at you, and has a very calm and soothing manner. If you are lucky enough to be referred to him, rest assured that you are in good hands, as he gets things actioned quickly.
