Breast Reconstruction Autologous

Treament Hero

Breast reconstruction using autologous fat grafting, also known as fat transfer, is a groundbreaking procedure that offers a natural and minimally invasive alternative to traditional implant-based reconstruction. This innovative technique involves harvesting fat from one area of the body, typically through liposuction, and transferring it to the breasts to enhance volume, shape, and symmetry. Not only does this method recreate a more authentic breast contour, but it also provides you with the added benefit of body contouring in the donor site.

About This Treatment

The treatment process begins with a comprehensive consultation between you and your oncoplastic surgeon specialising in autologous fat grafting.

During this initial evaluation, your surgeon assesses your medical history, current breast anatomy, and aesthetic goals to determine candidacy for the procedure. Ideal candidates for fat transfer reconstruction are generally in good health, have adequate donor fat deposits, and desire subtle to moderate breast augmentation. Your surgeon will also ensure you are fully aware of any potential risks, benefits, and expected outcomes. As a patient you are empowered to make informed decisions about your treatment plan, guided by the expertise and support of the BBG team.

The procedure itself consists of several steps. First, liposuction is performed to harvest fat from areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or hips. The harvested fat is then carefully processed to purify and isolate viable fat cells for transfer. Using precise injection techniques, the purified fat is strategically injected into the breast tissue to achieve the desired volume and shape. Multiple sessions of fat transfer may be necessary to achieve optimal results, spaced several months apart to allow for proper healing and fat survival.

In autologous breast reconstruction, the most appropriate techniques are used, according to your individual needs and preferences. DIEP (Deep Inferior Epigastric Perforator) flap technique involves meticulously transferring skin and fat from the lower abdomen to reconstruct the breast mound while preserving abdominal muscles. This method offers a natural breast appearance with minimised risk of abdominal weakness or hernia. Conversely, the Latissimus Dorsi flap technique utilises tissue from the back, including muscle, skin, and fat, which is tunnelled to the chest to form the new breast shape. Often combined with a breast implant for optimal volume, this approach provides durable and aesthetically pleasing results tailored to your anatomy and preferences.

One of the key advantages of breast reconstruction using fat transfer is the natural and long-lasting results it offers. Unlike implants, which may require replacement over time, fat transfer reconstruction utilises your own tissue, minimising the risk of rejection or complications. Additionally, the transferred fat integrates seamlessly with the surrounding breast tissue, providing a soft and natural feel. You can expect improved symmetry, enhanced breast contour, and minimal scarring compared to traditional implant-based reconstruction.

BBG’s multidisciplinary team coordinates follow-up appointments, including regular check-ups and consultations with oncologists, oncoplastic surgeons, and other specialists as needed.

In conclusion, breast reconstruction using fat transfer offers a revolutionary approach to restoring the shape and symmetry of the breasts following mastectomy. This innovative technique provides patients like you with natural and long-lasting results, while also offering the added benefit of body contouring. Integrated into BBG’s comprehensive breast cancer management services, fat transfer reconstruction reflects a commitment to patient-centred care and innovative treatment options. By combining expertise, compassion, and innovation, BBG empowers you to navigate your breast cancer journey with confidence and resilience.

Candidates for breast reconstruction using autologous fat grafting are typically individuals who have undergone mastectomy and desire subtle to moderate breast augmentation with natural-looking results. They should have adequate donor fat deposits in areas such as the abdomen, thighs, or hips. Ideal candidates are in good overall health and have realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure. Consultation with an oncoplastic surgeon specialising in fat transfer reconstruction is essential to assess candidacy, considering factors such as medical history, breast anatomy, and aesthetic goals. Ultimately, candidates seek a minimally invasive approach to breast reconstruction with the added benefit of body contouring.

Following breast reconstruction using autologous fat grafting, patients may experience temporary side effects such as swelling, bruising, and discomfort at the donor and recipient sites. Additionally, there may be minor asymmetry, changes in sensation, or irregularities in the breast contour. In some cases, fat necrosis, where a portion of transferred fat does not survive, may occur, leading to firmness or palpable nodules in the breasts. While these side effects are generally mild and resolve over time, patients should communicate any concerns with our healthcare team to ensure optimal healing and outcomes. Regular follow-up appointments are essential for monitoring and managing side effects.

Breast reconstruction using autologous fat grafting typically requires multiple treatment sessions spaced several months apart to achieve optimal results. Each session may involve liposuction and fat transfer, with downtime varying based on individual healing and the extent of the procedure. Generally, patients can expect one to two weeks of downtime after each session, including temporary swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Return to work is feasible within this timeframe, while resuming gym activities and driving may be advised after four to six weeks, following clearance from our healthcare team. Gradual resumption of activities is recommended to ensure proper healing and minimise complications.

I have been a patient of Dr Basu since being diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few months ago. Despite the curse of my diagnosis I couldn’t have asked for a better Dr and standard of care. He and his team are super-efficient, have gone out of their way to get fast effective treatment for me and he has super-human levels of patience. During every consultation he has been ever patient, carefully listened to all my questions and concerns then taken the time to explain everything to me and provided constant reassurance. He has been accessible at all times even over weekends and the support has been broad. He looks after you as if you are family and despite having a 90 minute journey to see him at times as we wanted the fastest appointment we couldn’t ask for anything more. Our family see him as an angel not just a doctor for what he has done for us and would recommend him in less than a blink of a eye.

I first met Naren Basu in 2016 at the Queen Elizabeth Women’s Hospital. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. He is an exceptionally skilled man at putting people at their ease and explaining everything with great patience and candour. He is a consummate professional and really knows his stuff, especially relating to breast cancer. He is very clever, witty, and a super surgeon. He carried out a reduction to both my breasts, removing the tumours at the same time. I was fortunate indeed to have my surgery via the NHS, it would have been very expensive as a private patient but worth every penny. I felt like a million dollars after my operation. I think he is a fabulous man and so skilled on so many levels and outstanding in human kindness.

Nine days before I was due to go on an extended holiday I discovered problems in both breasts. I was lucky enough to get an appointment 3 days before travel. Mr Basu even called me on the day of the appointment to ask me to come in earlier to ensure they had time to undergo all of the tests that evening. Anyone who has had these problems will know how overwhelming it is but Mr Basu took his time to speak to me and explained all of the procedures/tests that would be carried out that evening and possible outcomes. I did have a small procedure and again everything was explained fully and felt quite safe in his hands. The follow up appointments were just as thorough and Mr Basu made sure I understood all that we discussed. If I ever found myself in this position again Mr Basu would be my first port of call.
