Breast Lift
A breast lift, or mastopexy, is a surgical procedure designed to rejuvenate and reshape the breasts by lifting sagging tissues, improving breast contour, and restoring a more youthful appearance. Over time, factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and ageing can lead to changes in breast shape, volume, and position. A breast lift is ideal if you’re experiencing sagging breasts, stretched skin, downward-pointing nipples, or asymmetry. It aims to elevate the breasts, reposition the nipple-areolar complex, and remove excess skin to achieve a firmer, more youthful breast contour.

About This Treatment
Breast lift surgery involves various techniques tailored to meet your unique needs and aesthetic goals. The specific technique chosen depends on factors such as the degree of breast sagging, nipple position, and desired outcomes.
Anchor (Inverted-T) Technique: This traditional method involves creating incisions around the areola, vertically down to the breast crease, and horizontally along the breast crease. It allows for significant lifting and reshaping of the breast tissue and is suitable for moderate to severe breast ptosis (sagging).
Vertical Technique: This technique involves creating incisions around the areola and vertically down to the breast crease. It is suitable for moderate breast ptosis and results in less scarring compared to the anchor technique.
Peri-areolar Technique: This technique involves creating a circular incision around the areola, making it ideal for mild breast ptosis. It results in minimal scarring but may not be suitable for more severe cases of sagging.
During the procedure, your surgeon lifts and reshapes the breast tissue, repositions the nipple-areolar complex to a higher position, and removes any excess skin. The incisions are then meticulously closed, resulting in improved breast shape and contour. During a breast lift procedure, other surgeries can be combined to achieve the overall desired results. Common procedures performed concurrently with a breast lift include breast augmentation using implants or fat transfer to enhance volume, or breast reduction to reduce breast size and address sagging simultaneously. Combining procedures can minimise overall downtime and recovery while achieving a more balanced and harmonious breast appearance.
Following breast lift surgery, you can expect to achieve a more youthful, uplifted breast contour with improved symmetry and nipple position. The breasts will appear firmer, perkier, and more proportionate to the rest of the body. While some scarring is inevitable, it typically fades over time and can be concealed beneath clothing or swimsuits.
Recovery from breast lift surgery varies from patient to patient but generally involves a period of downtime to allow for healing. You may experience temporary swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with pain medication and proper post-operative care. It’s essential to follow your surgeon’s post-operative instructions closely, including wearing a supportive bra and avoiding strenuous activities for several weeks.
Breast lift surgery offers a transformative solution if you’re seeking to rejuvenate and reshape the breasts. By addressing concerns such as sagging, stretched skin, and nipple position, this procedure can restore confidence and enhance overall body contours. With advanced surgical techniques and personalised care, you can achieve natural-looking, long-lasting results that complement your unique anatomy and aesthetic goals. If you are considering a breast lift, consult with a board-certified oncoplastic surgeon to discuss your options and determine if this procedure is right for you.
Frequently Asked Questions
Suitable candidates for breast lift surgery are individuals experiencing breast sagging, stretched skin, or downward-pointing nipples due to factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, or ageing. Candidates may desire a firmer, more youthful breast contour and improved nipple position. They should be in good overall health, non-smokers, and have realistic expectations for the procedure. Breast lift surgery is ideal for individuals seeking to rejuvenate their breasts and restore confidence in their appearance. Consulting with BBG’s board-certified oncoplastic surgeon can help determine if breast lift surgery is the right option for addressing specific concerns and achieving desired aesthetic goals.
Breast lift surgery, like any surgical procedure, carries potential side effects and risks. Common side effects may include temporary discomfort, swelling, bruising, and numbness around the surgical site, which typically subside within a few weeks. Scarring is inevitable but can often be minimised with proper care and typically fades over time. In some cases, patients may experience changes in nipple sensation or asymmetry. More serious complications, although rare, may include infection, hematoma (accumulation of blood), or changes in breast shape or contour. It’s essential for patients to discuss potential risks and side effects with their surgeon before undergoing breast lift surgery.
Following breast lift surgery, downtime typically ranges from 1 to 2 weeks. Patients should avoid strenuous activities and lifting heavy objects during this time to facilitate proper healing. Most individuals can return to light activities, such as desk work, within a week, depending on their healing progress. However, it’s advisable to refrain from driving until off pain medication and able to move comfortably. Returning to the gym and vigorous exercise should be delayed for about 4 to 6 weeks to ensure the body heals fully and minimise the risk of complications.

I have been a patient of Dr Basu since being diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few months ago. Despite the curse of my diagnosis I couldn’t have asked for a better Dr and standard of care. He and his team are super-efficient, have gone out of their way to get fast effective treatment for me and he has super-human levels of patience. During every consultation he has been ever patient, carefully listened to all my questions and concerns then taken the time to explain everything to me and provided constant reassurance. He has been accessible at all times even over weekends and the support has been broad. He looks after you as if you are family and despite having a 90 minute journey to see him at times as we wanted the fastest appointment we couldn’t ask for anything more. Our family see him as an angel not just a doctor for what he has done for us and would recommend him in less than a blink of a eye.

I first met Naren Basu in 2016 at the Queen Elizabeth Women’s Hospital. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. He is an exceptionally skilled man at putting people at their ease and explaining everything with great patience and candour. He is a consummate professional and really knows his stuff, especially relating to breast cancer. He is very clever, witty, and a super surgeon. He carried out a reduction to both my breasts, removing the tumours at the same time. I was fortunate indeed to have my surgery via the NHS, it would have been very expensive as a private patient but worth every penny. I felt like a million dollars after my operation. I think he is a fabulous man and so skilled on so many levels and outstanding in human kindness.

Nine days before I was due to go on an extended holiday I discovered problems in both breasts. I was lucky enough to get an appointment 3 days before travel. Mr Basu even called me on the day of the appointment to ask me to come in earlier to ensure they had time to undergo all of the tests that evening. Anyone who has had these problems will know how overwhelming it is but Mr Basu took his time to speak to me and explained all of the procedures/tests that would be carried out that evening and possible outcomes. I did have a small procedure and again everything was explained fully and felt quite safe in his hands. The follow up appointments were just as thorough and Mr Basu made sure I understood all that we discussed. If I ever found myself in this position again Mr Basu would be my first port of call.

I am currently under the care of Dr Daniel Henderson at Good Hope Hospital, and I couldn’t ask for better. He listens, and speaks to you in laymans terms so you understand what is going on now and in the future. He talks to you and not at you, and has a very calm and soothing manner.
