Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation, also known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a popular cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at enhancing the size, shape, and symmetry of a woman’s breasts. It involves the use of implants or fat transfer techniques to increase breast volume, leading to a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing appearance. This procedure is sought after by women for various reasons, including to enhance self-confidence, restore breast volume lost due to weight loss or pregnancy, or to correct asymmetry.

About This Treatment
Breast augmentation primarily addresses concerns related to breast size and shape. Women may seek this procedure to achieve fuller breasts, correct asymmetry between breasts, or restore volume lost due to factors like ageing, pregnancy, or weight fluctuations.
It’s important to note that breast augmentation is a personal choice and should be undertaken with careful consideration of individual goals and expectations.
Before undergoing breast augmentation, you typically have a consultation with one of our board-certified oncoplastic surgeons to discuss your goals, medical history, and expectations. During this consultation, the surgeon evaluates your breast anatomy and discusses available options, including implant types, incision locations, and placement options. The surgical procedure itself is usually performed under general anaesthesia and can take a few hours to complete.
There are several techniques for breast augmentation, including:
Incision Placement: Incisions can be made in various locations, such as under the breast (inframammary), around the areola (periareolar), or in the armpit (transaxillary). The choice of incision location depends on factors such as the type of implant and your anatomy.
Implant Placement: Implants can be placed either behind the breast tissue (subglandular) or behind the chest muscle (submuscular). The optimal placement depends on factors such as your anatomy, implant type, and desired outcome.
Implant Type: You have the option to choose between saline and silicone implants. Each type has its own advantages and considerations, which are discussed with your surgeon during the consultation.
Once the implants are placed and positioned correctly, the incisions are closed with sutures, and the breasts are wrapped with bandages or a surgical bra to support the healing process.
When breast augmentation using fat transfer, also known as autologous fat transfer, is the preferred technique for enhancing the shape and size of the breasts, a two-step process is involved. First, fat is harvested from donor areas of the body, typically the abdomen, thighs, or buttocks, through liposuction. The harvested fat is then processed and purified before being injected into the breasts to increase volume and improve shape. This technique offers a natural-looking enhancement without the use of implants. You can benefit from both the removal of unwanted fat from donor areas and the augmentation of the breasts, achieving a more proportionate and aesthetically pleasing result with minimal scarring.
The results of breast augmentation are typically visible immediately after surgery, although it may take several weeks for swelling to subside and the final results to become apparent. You can expect fuller, more shapely breasts that enhance their overall silhouette. While breast augmentation can improve self-confidence and body image, it’s important to have realistic expectations and understand that individual results may vary.

Frequently Asked Questions
Suitable candidates for breast augmentation are typically women who are dissatisfied with the size, shape, or symmetry of their breasts and seek enhancement. They should be in good overall health, with realistic expectations about the outcomes of the procedure. Candidates should have fully developed breasts and be emotionally stable, understanding the permanent nature of the surgery. Women who have lost breast volume due to pregnancy, weight loss, or ageing may also benefit. However, each candidate is evaluated individually by a board-certified oncoplastic surgeon to determine their suitability and discuss personalised treatment options.
Following breast augmentation, common side effects may include temporary discomfort, swelling, bruising, and tightness in the chest area. Patients may also experience changes in nipple sensation, though this typically resolves over time. In some cases, there may be scarring around the incision sites, which fades gradually. Uncommon complications may include infection, implant rupture, or capsular contracture (scar tissue forming around the implant). It’s essential for patients to follow post-operative care instructions provided by their surgeon to minimise risks and ensure a smooth recovery. Regular follow-up appointments allow the surgeon to monitor progress and address any concerns promptly.
Following breast augmentation, downtime typically ranges from 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients can return to non-strenuous work within a few days, depending on individual healing. Driving may be resumed once off prescription pain medication and when mobility and comfort allow, usually within 1 to 2 weeks. Engaging in strenuous activities, including gym workouts, should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks to allow proper healing and minimise complications. Patients are advised to follow post-operative guidelines provided by their surgeon and gradually reintroduce physical activities as tolerated during the recovery period.

I have been a patient of Dr Basu since being diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few months ago. Despite the curse of my diagnosis I couldn’t have asked for a better Dr and standard of care. He and his team are super-efficient, have gone out of their way to get fast effective treatment for me and he has super-human levels of patience. During every consultation he has been ever patient, carefully listened to all my questions and concerns then taken the time to explain everything to me and provided constant reassurance. He has been accessible at all times even over weekends and the support has been broad. He looks after you as if you are family and despite having a 90 minute journey to see him at times as we wanted the fastest appointment we couldn’t ask for anything more. Our family see him as an angel not just a doctor for what he has done for us and would recommend him in less than a blink of a eye.

I first met Naren Basu in 2016 at the Queen Elizabeth Women’s Hospital. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. He is an exceptionally skilled man at putting people at their ease and explaining everything with great patience and candour. He is a consummate professional and really knows his stuff, especially relating to breast cancer. He is very clever, witty, and a super surgeon. He carried out a reduction to both my breasts, removing the tumours at the same time. I was fortunate indeed to have my surgery via the NHS, it would have been very expensive as a private patient but worth every penny. I felt like a million dollars after my operation. I think he is a fabulous man and so skilled on so many levels and outstanding in human kindness.

Nine days before I was due to go on an extended holiday I discovered problems in both breasts. I was lucky enough to get an appointment 3 days before travel. Mr Basu even called me on the day of the appointment to ask me to come in earlier to ensure they had time to undergo all of the tests that evening. Anyone who has had these problems will know how overwhelming it is but Mr Basu took his time to speak to me and explained all of the procedures/tests that would be carried out that evening and possible outcomes. I did have a small procedure and again everything was explained fully and felt quite safe in his hands. The follow up appointments were just as thorough and Mr Basu made sure I understood all that we discussed. If I ever found myself in this position again Mr Basu would be my first port of call.

I am currently under the care of Dr Daniel Henderson at Good Hope Hospital, and I couldn’t ask for better. He listens, and speaks to you in laymans terms so you understand what is going on now and in the future. He talks to you and not at you, and has a very calm and soothing manner. If you are lucky enough to be referred to him, rest assured that you are in good hands, as he gets things actioned quickly.
