Male Breast Reduction

Treament Hero

Male breast reduction, medically known as gynecomastia surgery, is a procedure aimed at reducing excess breast tissue in men. Gynecomastia can occur due to hormonal imbalances, genetics, obesity, or certain medications, resulting in the appearance of enlarged or feminine-looking breasts. This condition can have significant psychological and emotional impacts, leading many men to seek surgical intervention to restore a more masculine chest contour.

About This Treatment

Gynecomastia can cause feelings of self-consciousness, embarrassment, and decreased self-esteem. It may also interfere with clothing choices, physical activities, and intimate relationships.

While lifestyle changes and hormonal treatments may be beneficial for some cases, surgical intervention is often necessary to achieve optimal results, especially in cases of severe gynecomastia or when non-surgical methods have been ineffective.

Before undergoing male breast reduction, you will typically consult with one of our board-certified oncoplastic surgeons to discuss your concerns, medical history, and treatment options. During this consultation, your surgeon evaluates the extent of gynecomastia and develops a personalised treatment plan tailored to meet your individual needs and goals.

The surgical procedure for male breast reduction may involve liposuction, excision of glandular tissue, or a combination of both techniques, depending on the underlying cause and severity of gynecomastia.

Liposuction: In cases where excess fat contributes to gynecomastia, liposuction is used to remove fat deposits from the chest area. Small incisions are made, and a thin tube called a cannula is inserted to suction out fat cells, sculpting a more contoured chest appearance.

Glandular Tissue Excision: If glandular tissue is the primary cause of gynecomastia, surgical excision may be necessary. The surgeon makes discreet incisions around the areola or in the natural creases of the chest to remove excess glandular tissue and sculpt a flatter, more masculine chest contour.

The surgical technique chosen depends on your individual anatomy, the severity of gynecomastia, and the desired outcome. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia, and you may return home the same day or after a short observation period, depending on your surgeon’s recommendations.

Following male breast reduction surgery, you can expect a flatter, firmer, and more masculine chest contour. While some swelling, bruising, and discomfort are normal during the initial recovery period, these symptoms typically subside within a few weeks. You will be advised to wear a compression garment to support the healing process and minimise swelling. The final results of male breast reduction are typically visible within a few months as residual swelling resolves and the chest area settles into its new shape. With proper post-operative care and maintenance, the results are long-lasting, providing you with renewed confidence and improved self-image.

Suitable candidates for male breast reduction are men affected by enlarged breasts due to gynecomastia. They should be in good overall health, with stable body weight, and have realistic expectations. Candidates should have glandular or excess fatty tissue causing the enlargement that hasn’t responded to lifestyle changes. Those experiencing psychological distress or self-consciousness due to gynecomastia are also suitable candidates. It’s essential for individuals to undergo a thorough evaluation by a board-certified oncoplastic surgeon to determine candidacy and discuss personalised treatment options tailored to their needs and goals.

Following male breast reduction, common side effects include temporary discomfort, swelling, bruising, and numbness in the chest area. Patients may also experience changes in nipple sensation, though this typically resolves over time. Scarring around the incision sites is normal but fades gradually. Infrequent complications may include infection, bleeding, asymmetry, or fluid accumulation. It’s crucial for patients to follow post-operative care instructions provided by their surgeon to minimise risks and ensure a smooth recovery. Regular follow-up appointments allow the surgeon to monitor progress and address any concerns promptly.

Following male breast reduction, downtime typically ranges from 1 to 2 weeks. Most patients can return to non-strenuous work within a few days, depending on individual healing. Driving may be resumed once off prescription pain medication and when mobility and comfort allow, usually within 1 to 2 weeks. Engaging in strenuous activities, including gym workouts, should be avoided for 4 to 6 weeks to allow proper healing and minimise complications. Patients are advised to follow post-operative guidelines provided by their surgeon and gradually reintroduce physical activities as tolerated during the recovery period.

I have been a patient of Dr Basu since being diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few months ago. Despite the curse of my diagnosis I couldn’t have asked for a better Dr and standard of care. He and his team are super-efficient, have gone out of their way to get fast effective treatment for me and he has super-human levels of patience. During every consultation he has been ever patient, carefully listened to all my questions and concerns then taken the time to explain everything to me and provided constant reassurance. He has been accessible at all times even over weekends and the support has been broad. He looks after you as if you are family and despite having a 90 minute journey to see him at times as we wanted the fastest appointment we couldn’t ask for anything more. Our family see him as an angel not just a doctor for what he has done for us and would recommend him in less than a blink of a eye.

I first met Naren Basu in 2016 at the Queen Elizabeth Women’s Hospital. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. He is an exceptionally skilled man at putting people at their ease and explaining everything with great patience and candour. He is a consummate professional and really knows his stuff, especially relating to breast cancer. He is very clever, witty, and a super surgeon. He carried out a reduction to both my breasts, removing the tumours at the same time. I was fortunate indeed to have my surgery via the NHS, it would have been very expensive as a private patient but worth every penny. I felt like a million dollars after my operation. I think he is a fabulous man and so skilled on so many levels and outstanding in human kindness.

Nine days before I was due to go on an extended holiday I discovered problems in both breasts. I was lucky enough to get an appointment 3 days before travel. Mr Basu even called me on the day of the appointment to ask me to come in earlier to ensure they had time to undergo all of the tests that evening. Anyone who has had these problems will know how overwhelming it is but Mr Basu took his time to speak to me and explained all of the procedures/tests that would be carried out that evening and possible outcomes. I did have a small procedure and again everything was explained fully and felt quite safe in his hands. The follow up appointments were just as thorough and Mr Basu made sure I understood all that we discussed. If I ever found myself in this position again Mr Basu would be my first port of call.
