About This Treatment
Magseed© is a small magnetic marker, approximately the size of a grain of rice, embedded into the breast tissue to precisely localise breast lesions for surgical removal.
Unlike traditional localisation methods such as wire localisation, which can be cumbersome and uncomfortable for patients, Magseed© offers several advantages, including improved accuracy, increased flexibility in scheduling surgery, and enhanced patient comfort.
The Magseed© localisation procedure is performed as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthesia. Using ultrasound or mammography guidance, the radiologist inserts the Magseed marker into the breast tissue, adjacent to the target lesion. The magnetic properties of the Magseed© allow for precise localisation, ensuring your surgeon can accurately identify and remove the targeted area during surgery.
Birmingham Breast Group (BBG) is at the forefront of breast cancer management, incorporating innovative technologies like Magseed© into its comprehensive care framework. The seamless integration of Magseed© localisation within BBG’s services reflects a commitment to enhancing the patient experience, improving surgical accuracy, and optimising treatment outcomes for breast cancer patients.
At BBG, Magseed© localisation is performed by a multidisciplinary team of radiologists, breast surgeons, and pathologists, working collaboratively to ensure accurate lesion localisation and optimal surgical planning. This collaborative approach facilitates seamless coordination between imaging, surgery, and pathology departments, resulting in a streamlined and efficient patient pathway.
Central to BBG’s philosophy is a patient-centred approach that prioritises individualised care and patient comfort. Magseed© localisation offers several benefits for patients, including reduced procedure times, minimise discomfort, and increased flexibility in scheduling surgery. By leveraging Magseed© technology, BBG aims to enhance the patient experience and improve overall satisfaction with breast cancer treatment.
The integration of Magseed© localisation into breast cancer management services at BBG is expected to yield several positive outcomes. Firstly, Magseed© technology enhances surgical accuracy by providing precise localisation of breast lesions, thereby reducing the risk of incomplete excision and the need for repeat surgeries. Secondly, Magseed© localisation offers improved patient experience and comfort compared to traditional wire localisation methods, resulting in enhanced patient satisfaction and reduced anxiety surrounding surgery.
Furthermore, Magseed© localisation allows for increased flexibility in scheduling surgery, as the magnetic marker can be placed days or weeks in advance of the procedure. This flexibility not only improves the efficiency of surgical scheduling but also enables patients to undergo localisation and surgery on separate days, reducing the time spent in the hospital and minimising inconvenience.
BBG remains committed to ongoing research and innovation in breast cancer management, including the evaluation of new technologies and techniques such as Magseed© localisation. By participating in clinical trials and research studies, BBG contributes to the advancement of breast cancer care and ensures that patients have access to the latest evidence-based treatments and technologies.
Magseed© localisation represents a significant advancement in breast cancer management, offering improved accuracy, enhanced patient comfort, and optimised treatment pathways. Within the comprehensive breast cancer management services at Birmingham Breast Group (BBG), Magseed© integration exemplifies a commitment to innovation, excellence, and personalised patient care. With expectations of improved surgical outcomes and enhanced patient experience, Magseed© technology continues to revolutionise the way breast cancer is diagnosed and treated, ultimately improving outcomes and quality of life for patients.
Frequently Asked Questions
Candidates for Magseed© localisation include patients with non-palpable breast lesions requiring surgical excision, such as suspicious masses or microcalcifications identified on imaging studies like mammograms or breast ultrasound. Additionally, individuals undergoing breast conservation therapy or mastectomy may benefit from Magseed© localisation to accurately mark tumour margins and guide surgical resection. Magseed© localisation is particularly advantageous for patients with deep-seated or small lesions that are challenging to palpate during surgery. Multidisciplinary evaluation determines candidacy, ensuring that patients receive personalised and effective localisation strategies tailored to their specific clinical needs and treatment plans.
Side effects from Magseed© localisation are typically minimal. Some patients may experience mild discomfort or bruising at the insertion site, which resolves quickly. In some cases, allergic reactions to the materials used in Magseed© have occurred, although such occurrences are uncommon. Additionally, there’s a slight risk of infection or bleeding at the insertion site, although stringent sterile techniques minimise these risks. Overall, Magseed© localisation is a safe and well-tolerated procedure with minimal side effects, providing accurate lesion localisation with enhanced patient comfort compared to traditional wire localisation methods.
Magseed© is not licensed to remain in the body and will need to be removed at the time of surgery. In addition, it causes degradation of an MRI signal, making its use when future MRIs are required unlikely.
Following Magseed© localisation, downtime is minimal. Most patients can resume normal activities immediately after the procedure, including driving and returning to work. However, it’s advisable to avoid strenuous activities or going to the gym for a day or two to allow the insertion site to heal properly. Since Magseed© localisation is minimally invasive and typically causes minimal discomfort, patients can generally resume their usual routines without significant interruption. Nevertheless, individual recovery may vary, and it’s essential to follow any specific post-procedure instructions provided by the healthcare team for optimal healing and recovery.

I have been a patient of Dr Basu since being diagnosed with Breast Cancer a few months ago. Despite the curse of my diagnosis I couldn’t have asked for a better Dr and standard of care. He and his team are super-efficient, have gone out of their way to get fast effective treatment for me and he has super-human levels of patience. During every consultation he has been ever patient, carefully listened to all my questions and concerns then taken the time to explain everything to me and provided constant reassurance. He has been accessible at all times even over weekends and the support has been broad. He looks after you as if you are family and despite having a 90 minute journey to see him at times as we wanted the fastest appointment we couldn’t ask for anything more. Our family see him as an angel not just a doctor for what he has done for us and would recommend him in less than a blink of a eye.

I first met Naren Basu in 2016 at the Queen Elizabeth Women’s Hospital. I had been diagnosed with breast cancer. He is an exceptionally skilled man at putting people at their ease and explaining everything with great patience and candour. He is a consummate professional and really knows his stuff, especially relating to breast cancer. He is very clever, witty, and a super surgeon. He carried out a reduction to both my breasts, removing the tumours at the same time. I was fortunate indeed to have my surgery via the NHS, it would have been very expensive as a private patient but worth every penny. I felt like a million dollars after my operation. I think he is a fabulous man and so skilled on so many levels and outstanding in human kindness.

Nine days before I was due to go on an extended holiday I discovered problems in both breasts. I was lucky enough to get an appointment 3 days before travel. Mr Basu even called me on the day of the appointment to ask me to come in earlier to ensure they had time to undergo all of the tests that evening. Anyone who has had these problems will know how overwhelming it is but Mr Basu took his time to speak to me and explained all of the procedures/tests that would be carried out that evening and possible outcomes. I did have a small procedure and again everything was explained fully and felt quite safe in his hands. The follow up appointments were just as thorough and Mr Basu made sure I understood all that we discussed. If I ever found myself in this position again Mr Basu would be my first port of call.

I am currently under the care of Dr Daniel Henderson at Good Hope Hospital, and I couldn’t ask for better. He listens, and speaks to you in laymans terms so you understand what is going on now and in the future. He talks to you and not at you, and has a very calm and soothing manner. If you are lucky enough to be referred to him, rest assured that you are in good hands, as he gets things actioned quickly.
